Fit and weld steel pipe systems, and fit and glue composite pipe systems on ocean going barges and marine equipment. Assist in the structural assembly of ocean going barges and marine equipment when required. Perform work duties under the direction of Gunderson Marine Supervisory team.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Perform precise fitting work on components and work unassisted from spool drawings.
Tack parts or pipe spools in preparation for welding.
Prepare and glue composite pipe spools.
Set up and operate welding equipment.
Set up and operate shaving and glue equipment for composite pipe systems.
Visually inspect completed welds and glued joints to assure adherence to specifications.
Assist in structural assembly when necessary.
Follow and adhere strictly to Gunderson's safety policies and regulations.
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to weld pipe and become certifiable in 6G unlimited pipe welding position using various processes.
Ability to weld in flux core process and become certifiable in 1/16" FCAW all positions, unlimited thickness pass ABS 3G and 4G.
Ability to pass the Gunderson A-Test.
Ability to do math fraction calculations, read tape measure and pass written weld test.
Ability to rig pipe spools and valves into position using chain hoists and lever hoists.
Must be able to burn efficiently and with good quality using a hand-cutting torch.
Blueprint reading and layout skills.
Ability to troubleshoot minor welding equipment problems.
Ability to follow safety procedures.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
Motivated to continuously improve and learn new skills.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum 3 years industrial pipefitting experience.
Minimum 3 years of pipe welding experience.
License or Certificate
6G unlimited welding certification preferred.
1/16" FCAW all positions, unlimited thickness pass ABS 3G and 4G preferred.
Typical work schedule is 8-hour shift, M-F. Must have availability to work at least two of three shifts (Day, Swing, Grave); varies depending on production needs. Shift assignments are long-term and do not change unless production needs change or in the case of an approved request/accommodation. Overtime may be required depending on production needs; may require up to 10 hour work days and/or work on weekends.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Environment : Manufacturing site environment requires work around traffic and heavy manufacturing equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; dim lit areas, on slippery or uneven surfaces, exposure to heat, cold, noise, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, toxic chemicals; inclement weather conditions; moving objects/vehicles. Work in confined space required: Yes
Physical: Must be of height and weight that will allow entrance and movement through man way and tank openings. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs occasionally without assistance; push/pull up to 10lbs frequently; twist, bend, kneel, climb, crawl frequently. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time; operate motorized vehicles and equipment. Respirator fit required: Yes
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents and operate equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
