SUMMARY
The Welding Engineer develops welding techniques, and applications of welding equipment in use for fabrication of metals.
Job Duties
Investigates and documents welding defects to determine appropriate cause and corrective measures
Evaluates and implements use of new welding technology
Develops welding procedures for utilization of new equipment.
Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventative maintenance investigations
Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel
Works closely with manufacturing and engineering leadership by actin as welding process subject matter expert on plant level launches, projects, and activities
Provides key input into the development of departmental strategic goals along with identifying key measurable processes to support the departmental goals
Develops guidelines for design of manual, robotic, and spot weld fixturing
Performs work under minimal supervision
Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex to higher level staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Possesses comprehensive knowledge of welding techniques, fabrication of metals, welding processes, and welding technology
Ability to specify welding equipment, welding consumables, electrical and mechanical systems, robotic systems, and any related components associated with the welding processes
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings or prints and customer specifications
Experience to developing welding procedures (WPS, PQR) and select proper welding equipment to maintain adherence to customer specifications/material metallurgical reequirements, including welding of critical joints, multi-pass welds, and pre and post heat requirements.
Experience recommending and developing preventative maintenance procedures for all plant welding equipment, including robotic systems.
Experience evaluating processes and procedures to maintain or improve weld parameters and weld efficiency.
Experience developing and performing inspection procedures
Development and implementation of welding training programs that improves and develops welder skills and capabilities.
Understanding and focus of continuous improvement processes, procedures, and projects.
Knowledge of welder and welding safety standards
Expertise in GMAW, GTAW, Air Carbon Arc, SAW, and FCAW welding procedures and processes. Experience with stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel
Demonstrated use of Solid edge to design manual, robotic, and spot welding fixturing
Demonstrated understanding and practice of lean manufacturing concepts in business and manufacturing environments.
Experience & Education
Bachelors Degree in weld engineering or equivelent preferrred
4 -- 6 years experience in railcar manufacturing preferred
Working knowledge of AAR/FRA regulatory requirements preferred
Licenses, Certifications, etc.:
CWI Certification is required
NDT level 3 certifications preferred
