Summary
The Senior Weld Specialist provides guidance and technical welding support to the Greenbrier repair and manufacturing facilities. The Senior Weld Specialist leads process improvement and facilitates new technology implementation across all welding processes, and will manage processes in compliance with the requirements of Greenbrier’s Corporate Welding Program as well as those set forth by the AAR and the DOT.
Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.
Evaluates and assures welding processes and procedures are compliant to applicable specifications, and are fit for function, including establishing welding parameters compliant to welding procedure specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Reports (PQR).
Reviews drawings to ensure the weld joint designs are compliant with the applicable specification and proper welding practices.
Assists in resolving technical and quality issues associated with welding.
Interfaces with suppliers and represents Greenbrier’s needs and requirements.
Works with plant management, production, quality assurance and engineering to support all aspects of welding.
Continuously validates the effectiveness of the welding program and personnel skills through audit results and actual production and quality output.
Attends industry seminars and meetings as needed to stay current with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
The following generally describes requirements to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years’ experience in welding technology, or a combination of education and experience to be equal or greater than 6 years
Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification
Proficiency with GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, MCAW, PAG, CAC, FCAW, SAW weld processes
Proficient to develop, demonstrate, and test welding processes, and procedures
Ability to collaborate and communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, at all levels of the organization
Ability to balance priorities with accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to analyze and find solutions to difficult or complex issues
Ability to identify, plan, start, and complete projects or other work that needs to be accomplished
Ability to organize and prioritize projects and information with accuracy
Ability to comprehend and interpret railroad industry rules and regulations
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite applications including but not limited to, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SmartSheet
Ability to travel up to 75%
Preferred Qualifications
2+ years working in weld technology for railcar manufacturing
Working knowledge of railcar design, construction, fabrication, maintenance, industry codes and regulations
Familiarity with NDE disciplines and techniques

This position is in a production environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, moving machinery, uneven walking surfaces, and trip hazards where personal protective equipment such as head, eye, hearing, and foot protection are required. This position may be exposed to welding, machining, forming, metal surface treatment, laser cutting, plasma cutting, and other metal working and assembly processes. Additional PPE may be required as determined by the environment.
