A key leadership position in one of Greenbrier Management Services' (GMS) highest growth areas, is the industry's leading comprehensive asset management provider and is primarily about change management and process implementation. This position works out of our Ft. Worth office with team members and some work remotely.
This group's services include car repair billing estimates and invoice audit and approval, shop and program management, hosting business status updates with the customers, responsible for communicating industry developments, spend analysis, and providing industry knowledge to the team.
Coordinates and collaborates with VP Regulatory Services to ensure tank car compliance on behalf of our customers' managed tank equipment. Frequent and on-going communication with members of the GMS Leadership Team to coordinate downstream and upstream impacts of Shipper Services activities, ensure proper handoff on responsibilities, and improve processes that affect multiple departments.
This position will report directly to the SVP & GMS Business Unit head, with dotted line responsibility to the AVP Asset Management and will participate as a member of GMS' Leadership Team, which sets quarterly, annual, and long-term goals for the business unit.
Responsible for the operations of the asset management and support team tasked with delivery of shipper-facing asset management services (Shipper Services) for GMS' entire industrial shipper customer base, consisting of assets of every type
Responsible for implementing the business process, systems, and operational change management required to reflect GMS' over-arching mission to increase the efficiency of our service delivery and revenue generation through constant improvement of our People, Processes, and Systems
Requires leadership at a cultural level to shift how we think about, execute, and communicate the service
Lead team day-to-day operations and responsible for a staff of about ten asset managers and support staff
Ensure communication lines are open while maintaining a sense of trust and respect at all levels
Coach team members consistently by providing constructive feedback and removing roadblocks -- cultivating a high-performance team
Work directly with AVP Asset Management to continue in-flight personnel development plans
Set and communicate specific division level priorities. Facilitate goals for the broader function and work with managers to ensure goals cascade to the entire team
Manage overall financial budgeting for the function
Responsible for talent acquisition and identifying talent development opportunities for the staff
Provide training opportunities when Enable a learning/mentoring environment by leveraging tools already in place
Lead customer communication and status calls -- work with peers in other groups to maintain a reliable partnership - ensuring a consistent message to the customer
Collaborate with other GMS functional groups and leaders to ensure smooth, consistent delivery of service within the scope of the service agreements
Partner with GMS VP Sales on customer care to ensure customer expectations are understood and the service metrics/goals are aligned
Implement changes to the Shipper Service group's operations at the People, Process, and/or Systems-level to reflect the strategic goals or tactics identified at the Business Unit level
Identify and lead efforts to improve efficiency through people, process, or systems changes, supporting the broad initiative of increasing efficiency and reducing waste in the Shipper Service group
Institute a consistent set of business processes, training materials, meeting protocols, and other tasks related to a base-level set of asset management functions across all asset managers and support staff
Participate in the scoping and requirements gathering for software upgrades and changes to promote more efficient business processes for the Shipper Services functional group
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in business, administration, engineering, or related field
10+ years leading and managing teams
5+ years in rail industry, as shipper, logistics manager, or asset manager
Knowledge of AAR/FRA rules and rulemaking process is a plus
Experience with tank car repair, maintenance, qualification or general ownership and operation requirements
Demonstrated ability to lead a group through change in approach, in accountability, in discipline, in culture
Leadership, management, and mentorship of staff with diverse skill sets, areas of expertise, and disperse geographic locations
Ability to mentor and develop up and coming key personnel
Familiarity or training in Lean, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement discipline
Ability to think strategically and translate that thinking to tactical tasks and goals to achieve the broader objective
Ability to use data and analytics to drive operating performance improvements
Direct experience with change management methodologies and disciplines
