Summary Description

This position will direct and coordinate tank car production at the facility to ensure efficiencies in operation in order to meet production and quality guidelines. The Superintendent is responsible for the development and safe work environment for supervisors and hourly employees under their direction. The Superintendent will provide leadership and guidance for daily coordination of all Supervisors and their extended hourly employee teams to meet production, safety and quality standards. This position is responsible for communicating to the Plant Manager and Supervisors to discuss overall facility production, performance to metrics and adjustment of work as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities are listed below. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Monitor production efficiencies throughout the facility.

  • Monitor training and application of correct work process for employees; assures that all training and safety programs are adhered to and adjusted for continuous improvement.

  • Coordinates with shop Supervisors in scheduling to obtain optimum efficiency with available work.

  • Evaluates production and control labor costs and supply expense.

  • Drives continuous improvement in production, employee talent, safety and process using a variety of leadership and continuous improvement tools.

  • Monitors car-flow to shop and inspection to forward plan work demand.

  • Assists Plant Manager in forecasting workforce needs.

  • Assists Plant Manager in evaluating production plan for inefficiencies.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned by the Plant Manager.

  • Manage facility in absence of Plant Manager.

  • Able to work flexible shop hours and weekends as needed for production.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual will possess the following knowledge, characteristics, skills and/or abilities:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of AAR quality standards and FRA rules for Tank Car and Freight railroads.

  • Experience with repair, documentation and certification standards for tank cars

  • Proficient in personal computer software applications, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, MRP and related systems.

  • Attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines for self and team.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitive information.

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships and teamwork.

  • Good spelling, grammar, and written communication skills.

  • Excellent oral communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish an asset.

  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills, ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to develop long-term plans and programs and to evaluate work accomplishments.

  • Working experience with proven results implementing and leading quality and continuous improvement methodologies such as LEAN, Six Sigma, high performance teams, ISO and/or 4DX.

  • Willingness to complete additional training or education as needed.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or related field preferred.

  • Five to seven years related work experience: welding and freight rail car/ tank car repair work.

  • Three to five years of related experience in a supervisory role over 100 employees.

  • P&L exposure to a business in excess of $25 million revenue.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Must be able to do the following occasionally (33% of the time, 2.5+ hours/day): Sit, Push/Pull 41-100 lbs., Lift/Carry 21-100+ lbs.

  • Must be able to do the following frequently (33%-66% of the time, 2.5 to 5.5+hours/day): Stand, Handling/Fingering, Reach outward, Reach above shoulder, Climb, Crawl, Squat or kneel, Bend,Push/Pull 12-40 lbs., Lift/Carry 10-20 lbs.

  • Must be able to do the following constantly (More than 66% of the time, 5.5+ hours/day): Walk
